Bruce Chaser Tribute
Retired...but not forgotten.
Hawthorne Wellness Center was developed by chiropractor Bruce Chaser in the fall of 2005. Long a fixture in the Hawthorne neighborhood, Bruce's chiropractic practice began in 1985, at Ancina Chiropractic Clinic on SE Hawthorne Boulevard at 34th. After practicing there for twenty years, Bruce took ownership of the former "Harry's Mother" building on SE Hawthorne near 39th and remodeled it to house Hawthorne Wellness Center.
With the opening of HWC, Bruce realized his dream: the creation of a cooperative clinic offering the integrated, holistic healthcare services of a group of dedicated practitioners. Bruce inspired all who joined him—acupuncturists, chiropractors, massage therapists, a counselor, a family medical doctor, and a naturopath—with his commitment both to excellence in patient care and to the cooperative running of a wellness center. These values, as well as Bruce's love for life, will continue to shape Hawthorne Wellness and inspire those who practice at the clinic after him.
Always a man of diverse interests, Bruce retired in the spring of 2014, to spend more time with his wife, Cinnamon, traveling, guitar-playing, hiking, and working out. He knew his practice would— literally—be in good hands with his successor, Dr. Scott Haines, and the other providers at Hawthorne Wellness. Although he would miss his colleagues, as well as the many patients he had cared for over the years, Bruce felt ready to make a change.
Having served on the board of directors of the Hawthorne Boulevard Business Association for more than 20 years, Bruce continues in his role as chairman of the board of directors of The CHP Group (Complementary Healthcare Plans), a Portland-based complementary and alternative healthcare insurance company, for which he also serves as an associate medical director. He also serves on the board of directors of the Portland Actors Conservatory, the premiere school for professional actor training in the Pacific Northwest.
And, on occasion, Bruce can still be seen at Hawthorne Wellness, going to lunch with one of his former colleagues or substituting when Dr. Haines is on vacation. Patients who see him in the Hawthorne district describe him as looking relaxed and happy.
